C. The SAILCT Comprehensive Coaching Course: Comprehensive Coverage

Recommended for: Transitioning therapists and counselors into coaching and all human development professionals, such as educators, therapists, social workers, counselors, attorneys, consultants, librarians, etc.

This course is aimed at focusing on being relevant in the context of the South African market, specifically designed for human developmental professionals and others with backgrounds in the people business. The course is rooted in transitioning therapists and counselors into coaching. It has blossomed into a class that serves all human development professionals, such as educators, therapists, social workers, counselors, attorneys, consultants, librarians, etc.

This course is not an International Coaching Federation (ICF) accredited course in order to offer an affordable but solid content training course. The option and prerogative to choose where to affiliate and associate is left to the student.

We decided that it is more appropriate and relevant to align ourselves with Coaches and Mentors of South Africa (Comensa) www.comensa.co.za . Individuals who have completed the course may still approach the ICF for affiliation should they wish to.

This course (5 days of 8 hours each plus additional field work and practical) provides essential and in depth knowledge and skills to launch a coaching career through daytime classes. To gain the most out of this learning experience, students will be asked to prepare for and participate in 5 full day classes, complete post-class assignments (called fieldwork) and self study over a period of 3 weeks. The total estimated time commitment per week is 4 to 5 hours.

After the above has been completed an open book exam is written in the leisure of your own home and emailed to us. You will need a minimum of 70% or better in order to successfully pass this course. Other course completion requirements may apply, and will be communicated to the student.

Students will need to have regular access to the internet and will have to research web sites and material pertaining to Life Coaching to gain as much as possible valuable information.

Module 1: Introduction to Coaching covers the most recent definitions of coaching, distinctions between therapy and coaching, and Listening as a Coach.
Module 2: Coaching Basics defines the coaching alliance and explains how you might design one, what elements are necessary for the first coaching conversation, introduces and explains the basic coaching model, discusses powerful questions and purposeful inquiry, how to design the action, and what someone does with what they already know.
Module 3: The Coaches Tool Box covers skills and tools for empowering and forwarding the action, Advanced Coaching skills, and allows time for the students to practice coaching.
Module 4: Marketing Your Practice provides insight into marketing effectively, creating a full and fulfilling practice, the importance of credibility, visibility, and contact with a client and practice building tips.
Module 5: Coaching from the Inside Out focuses on life design and personal fulfillment. This is a personal journey in designing your own life and utilizes skills and techniques useful in working with clients.
Module 6: Coaching Labs focus on role-play and the coaching process based on the skills and tools taught in previous classes. Each student is expected to serve as coach and client over the total training period.

D. SAILCT Certified Life Coach:

To receive SAILCT recognition as a SAILCT Certified Life Coach you will need to have completed the SAILCT Comprehensive Coaching Course as a pre requisite. The terms and conditions will be discussed at a personal interview(s) scheduled either in person or per Skype with the student. A personal assessment will be conducted.

What you need to know regarding Certification: Many Corporate- and Community Institutions and individuals pose this question (whether our courses are accredited) on a regular basis. Fact is that Coaching has evolved so rapidly that structures and regulatory bodies or systems have not been able to keep pace with the enormous growth experienced in fulfilling the need of Life Coaching, here in South Africa and abroad.

From my conversations with leading experts in the industry, it is clear that there currently exists no official statutory body anywhere in the world, but many roll players are communicating and finding ways and models to introduce such.

In South Africa, some attempts are currently being made to register Life Coaching with the Skills Education Training Authority of South Africa (SETA), but this remains a work in progress.

The UK founder of New Insights responded to this question on their web site saying: “Internationally there is no official regulatory standard for Life Coaching and in South Africa as in most other countries there is no government regulated education or training standard for the Life Coaching industry yet.

There are a few self-appointed accreditation bodies that are internationally known / represented, such as the International Coach Federation (ICF), the International Coaching Council (ICC) the European Coaching Institute (ECI) and the International Association of Coaching (IAC). They are all privately owned concerns with no independent supervisory board to evaluate their programs.

COMENSA (the representative body in SA for coaches and mentors) does not currently offer any form of coach accreditation.

At the present, anyone who is involved in the coaching and/or mentoring industry is welcome to apply to join COMENSA. The body is currently reviewing whether to introduce a tiered form of membership structure where membership criteria would be introduced to take account of a coach’s experience and training. A decision on this is likely to take some time”

We adhere to the Code of Ethics as per COMENSA. The SAILCT has adopted its own standard for life coaches trained by them in South Africa by means of a yearly certification of members in good standing with the SAILCT and voluntary registration with the SAILCT. As is the case with most Life Coaching schools and practices, we have chosen not to align ourselves with any one of these bodies in particular at this stage as each has quite different requirements, approaches and fees when it comes to accreditation. We encourage coaches trained by us to pursue accreditation with any of the aforementioned overseas bodies if the need therefore arises as individual members.

In conclusion, Corporate Institutions, professionals and individuals must be encouraged to pursue Life Coaching in all its facets of the coach approach and not be influenced or discouraged by an apparent lack of regulatory bodies and accreditation. It may be wise to become part of, and involved in Life Coaching being in its relatively early stages of development, so as to be part of the pioneering generation which surely will become the most powerful tool to change our world for the better. – Roy Harris: Founder: SAILCT
